Frequently asked questions

What should a painting estimate include?
Square footage with the measurement basis stated, prep work as its own line, paint brand/line/sheen, number of coats, trim and doors priced separately, protection and cleanup terms, total with tax and a validity window. Specific estimates beat round numbers in side-by-side comparisons.
How do painters estimate a job?
Measure wall area, multiply by a per-square-foot rate that reflects prep condition and paint grade, then add trim, doors and ceilings as separate items. Production-rate math (a painter covers roughly 150–200 sq ft/hour on smooth walls) sanity-checks the labor side.
How much does interior painting cost in 2026?
Nationally, $2–$6 per square foot of wall area, or roughly $350–$800 for a standard 12×12 room, two coats with normal prep. Premium paint, repairs and high ceilings push it up — the table above gives the common ranges.
Should paint be included in a painting estimate?
Either works, but say which. Including materials (with the brand named) is more common for residential; charging paint at cost with a materials line suits color-heavy custom jobs. This template shows paint as a separate line so the client sees the grade.
Is this painting estimate template free?
Yes — unlimited estimates and PDF downloads, no account, and your numbers stay in your browser.
