What makes a punch list actually get closed

How it works

1

Walk the job and type items

Location, deficiency, trade. The example rows show the level of detail that works.

2

Assign and date each line

Every item gets an owner and a due date — that's what turns a list into a plan.

3

Download and send the PDF

One numbered list everyone works from. Update statuses and re-download for the follow-up walk.

Frequently asked questions

What is a punch list in construction?
The list of deficiencies found at substantial completion — touch-ups, adjustments and incomplete details — that must be corrected before final payment and release of retainage. The name comes from the old practice of punching a hole next to completed items.
Who prepares the punch list?
Typically the owner, architect or GC during the walkthrough, with the contractor present. Subs then receive their items. This tool works for either side — prepare the master list, or track just your trade's items.
How detailed should punch list items be?
One deficiency per line, with a location. 'Doors' is not an item; 'Ease and re-hang pantry door — rubbing at head' is. Specific items close faster and prevent disputes about what 'done' meant.
Is this punch list template free?
Yes — unlimited lists and PDF downloads, no account. Data stays in your browser; leave your email once if you'd like the small EstimateWiz line removed from the PDF.
